Self Assessment Tax Returns

1

Overview

If you are self-employed, a landlord, a company director taking dividends, or have income that is not taxed through PAYE, you probably need to file a self assessment tax return every year. We prepare and submit it for you, make sure you claim everything you are entitled to, and tell you exactly what to pay and when. No surprises in January.

From £200 + VAT per return.

Who we help

• Sole traders and freelancers

• Company directors taking dividends

• Landlords with rental income (see our landlord and property tax service)

• Higher earners with income that is not fully taxed through PAYE, such as investment income, or who need to claim extra tax relief on pension contributions

• Anyone with untaxed income, such as savings, investments or foreign income

• People who are newly self-employed and filing for the first time

3

What is included

• Registering you with HMRC if you are filing for the first time

• Preparing your return from your records, and checking for allowable expenses and reliefs

• Reviewing your tax code and payments on account

• Submitting the return to HMRC once you have approved it

• A clear summary of what you owe and the dates to pay it

• Help with tax refunds, and support if HMRC raises an enquiry

How it works

1. Get in touch using our enquiry form and tell us about your income.

2. Send us your records. We will tell you exactly what we need.

3. We prepare your return and go through it with you.

4. You approve it, and we file it with HMRC.

Making Tax Digital

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is now in force. Sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 have had to keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC since April 2026. The threshold falls to £30,000 from April 2027 and to £20,000 from April 2028.

We can check whether and when it applies to you, set you up on suitable software and handle the quarterly updates for you.

Common questions

When is the self assessment deadline?

Online returns must reach HMRC by 31 January after the end of the tax year, and that is also when any tax is due. Paper returns are due earlier, by 31 October.

I am filing for the first time. When do I need to register?

By 5 October after the end of the tax year in which you first had income to declare. If you have missed it, get in touch and we will help you register straight away.

What happens if I file late?

HMRC charges an automatic £100 penalty the day after the deadline, even if you have no tax to pay, and further penalties build up the longer it is late.

What does "from £200 + VAT" cover?

A return with a single source of self-employed or other income and organised records. The price may be higher if you have several sources of income, or several bank accounts and statements for us to work through. We will always confirm your price before we start.
